How a Refrigerator Works

A refrigerator doesn't actually cool things, it removes the heat from them. But then you probably don't want a physics lesson. But you may wonder where the "cold" comes from. So here is a little bit more physics. When a gas goes from a state of high pressure to a state of low pressure, the temperature of the gas drops.

Your refrigerator has a compressor and a closed system of tubing that contains a gas (the refrigerant). The compressor pumps the refrigerant and compresses it. The refrigerant flows through the coils on the back or under the refrigerator and through an expansion valve to the inside of the freezer. As the refrigerant passes through the expansion valve the pressure drops and so does the temperature. Inside the freezer a fan circulates air over the cool tubing and the refrigerant absorbs the heat from the freezer's relatively warmer air. If you prefer to just think of the fan blowing cold air into the appliance, that's fine, it all works out to pretty much the same results. But technically, the heat is being pumped out rather than the cold being pumped in.

The cold air in most refrigerators, but not all, comes from the freezer. The cold air in the freezer passes through vents to the refrigerator. A thermostat in the refrigerator activates the compressor whenever the temperature rises above the set point on the temperature control. In some newer models there is a separate cooling coil for the freezer and the refrigerator and thus two temperature controls.

As the air in the refrigerator cools, the water in the air (humidity) condenses. Water that condenses in the freezer will freeze into frost. Most modern refrigerators have an automatic defroster in the freezer which prevents the build up of frost. The defroster is simply a heating element that is controlled by a defrost timer and a thermostat. The water from the melted frost drains out of the refrigerator into a pan beneath the refrigerator and evaporates.

A door switch closes a circuit when the door is opened and turns on the interior light. When the door is open some refrigerators will disable some components such as the fan, defrost heater or "through the door" ice and water dispensing.

A common question we hear pertains to operating a refrigerator in the garage or other unheated space during cold weather. Bottom line, refrigerators and freezers don't cool efficeintly when operated at temperatures below, roughly, 45 degrees (F). The first reason is that the outside temperature may get low enough that the thermostat inside the refrigerator never gets warm enough to activate the compressor and so the freezer warms up to the outside temperature. Another problem is that if it gets too cold, the refrigerant pressure becomes too low to generate the necessary cold and so the freezer only chills down to the outside temperature.

In fact, the National Electrical Code requires some circuits in kitchens and bathrooms to be dedicated and even protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlet. Main Service Upgrades & Replacements

The heart of your home is the main electrical service panel. Over the years, with the influx of modern technology, the capabilities, quality, and condition of your homes electrical system has become very important. Servicing it, replacing it or upgrading it has become a necessary part of maintaining your home when you have a service panel that is outdated, showing signs of trouble, or doesn’t offer enough amperage support for the electrical needs of your home.

What is the purpose of the main service panel? Well, a common misconception is that its sole purpose is to distribute power to the home. However, one of the primary responsibilities of the main service is as a safety device designed to cut the power in the event of a problem. What this means is that just because your lights and electronics turn on and off in your home doesn’t necessarily mean that your panel is safe and working properly. Many problems in the panel go unnoticed until a bigger problem arises, that is why we always do a full inspection on every job we do to make sure your home panel can handle any new electrical work being done in your home, and more importantly, is operating properly and safely.

Much like the brakes in your car, replacement is recommended before the device completely fails because it is a safety device for you home. Feder's recommends replacing panels manufactured by both Zinsco and Federal Pacific. These panels have a poor safety record and we recommend replacing them with a safer, more reliable and up to date panel. Both were popular designs a long time ago and are commonly found in older homes. However, they both have proven to have significant flaws in there design and have been shown unreliable to cut power in the event of an overload which can lead to damage to the panel, breakers, homes electrical devices, or even in some cases cause a fire or hurt someone.

Home Safety Devices

Is there anything more important in your home than your family’s safety? Of course not, and that is why Feder's takes pride in making sure your home is protected by the best safety devices available.

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI’s): It’s no secret water and electricity doesn’t mix. Did you know it takes only about 0.1 amps (one tenth of an amp) of electricity to stop a human heart? In areas like your bathroom and kitchen, you have 20 amps of electricity in each outlet in the vicinity of water. That’s enough electricity to stop 200 hearts in each outlet! This is precisely why engineers designed a safety device to protect you in the event of a shock.

GFCI’s are a very sensitive safety device designed to break the circuit and cut the power to the cord in milliseconds to protect you from these heart stopping attacks. All wet areas of your home such as your bathroom, kitchen counters, patio, etc. are required under the National Electrical Code to be protected by a GFCI device. Our expert technicians can show you where they are needed and test any existing ones you may have to be sure they are functioning properly.

Smoke Detectors: Today’s safety codes require smoke detectors to be present in everyone’s home. Since the introduction of this early warning device, fatalities in home fires have declined by more than 50%! Even fewer deaths would be avoided in cases where the smoke detectors were not functional because of a lack of power. That is why we install units that are both hard wired into your electrical system and also have a battery back up to insure your family is always protected.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Carbon Monoxide is known as the “Silent Killer” because it is odorless, tasteless, and invisible gas. It inhibits the bloods ability to carry oxygen to body tissues and vital organs potentially damaging them. It is formed in the home from incomplete combustion from any flame-fueled (i.e., not electric) device, including ranges, ovens, dryers, furnaces, fireplaces, grills, space heaters, vehicles, yard equipment and water heaters.

Adding to the dangers of this gas is that many of symptoms from exposure are misdiagnosed because they resemble flu-like symptoms. Higher concentrations of exposure can lead to more serious symptoms such as dizziness, serious headaches, nausea, impaired vision and reduced coordination. It is fatal at very high concentrations.

That is why Feder's recommends installing a carbon monoxide detector in all locations where smoke detectors are required. We even offer combination units that detect both smoke and carbon monoxide.

R-410A Puron

Genetron R410A and AZ-20

R-410A, sold under the trademarked names Puron, Genetron R410A, and AZ-20, is a near-azeotropic mixture of difluoromethane (CH2F2, called R-32) and pentafluoroethane (C2HF5, called R-125), which is used as a refrigerant in air conditioning applications. Unlike many haloalkane refrigerants it does not contribute to ozone depletion, and is therefore becoming more widely used as ozone-depleting refrigerants like R-22 are phased out. However, it has a high global warming potential of 1725 (1725 times the effect of carbon dioxide),[1] similar to that of R-22.

While R-410A was invented and patented by Allied Signal (now Honeywell) and Honeywell continues to be the leader in 410A capacity and sales, other producers around the world have been licensed to manufacture and sell the product. R-410A was successfully commercialized in the air conditioning segment by a combined effort of three companies. Carrier Corporation, Emerson Climate Technologies, Inc. with Copeland Scroll Compressors (a division of Emerson Electric Company), and Allied Signal worked together in developing the refrigerant for practical use in air conditioners in the United States. R-410A is also the preferred refrigerant for use in residential and commercial air conditioners in Japan and Europe, replacing R-22.

Carrier Corporation was the first company to introduce a R-410A-based residential air conditioning unit in the marketplace in 1996. Carrier holds the trademark Puron and is still the leading supplier of energy efficient R410A air conditioning systems for residential, commercial and chiller applications in the United States today.

R-410A is incompatible with R-22 refrigerant. R-410A is used at much higher operating pressures than R-22 and other newer refrigerants.

Although the United States Environmental Protection Agency has mandated that R-22 (chlorodifluoromethane) along with other hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC's) be phased-out in the U.S., few window-mounted air conditioners are available that use R-410A. All of the largest central air conditioning systems manufacturers in the U.S. offer systems that use R-410A. As an alternative to window-mounted systems, a ductless "split" system is available with R-410A refrigerant, and can be installed with a 3-inch hole through the wall (or window opening).[5]

R-410A designed systems employ thicker walled tubing, and compressors capable of withstanding the higher pressures of R-410A. R-410A systems require different installation and service procedures.

New equipment that uses R-410A will require service personnel to acquire different tools and equipment, safety standards and fundamentals when installing, replacing older split A/C systems, and repairing systems in the field.

HVAC service persons need to understand the safe handling, proper charging, operating characteristics, proper applications, and general use of R-410A refrigerant.

R-410A should only be used in equipment specifically designed and constructed for higher pressure refrigerants. Operates at considerably higher pressures and requires the use of special tanks, gauges and recovery equipment.

R-410A requires training of installation and service personnel in the proper and safe handling of R-410A.

R-410A needs service personnel to understand why all refrigerant flow controls, valves and driers have changed and must be properly applied with newly designed and built compressors.

Many equipment manufacturers are well aware of the concerns and safety issues of working with R-410A and other HFC refrigerants and are requiring installation and service professionals who purchase their R-410A systems to be R-410A Certified.

In order to prepare air conditioning professionals for the challenges presented by R410A, some of the major organizations in the HVACR created the AC&R Safety Coalition.

This service involves the act of modifying, upgrading, replacing, and/or installing specific elements in a dwelling in order to facilitate compliance with the safety and conservation requirements of city and state ordinances.

Feder's home zoning system is specially designed to allow your entire family to be comfortable, regardless of where they are in your home. Now you can have multiple thermostats that divide your home into specific zones that can be controlled independently, whether heating or cooling. Imagine the bedrooms on one zone, the family room on another, the kitchen on a third and your home office with it's own control. Even better yet, you can finally control that hard to heat and cool addition or garage conversion!

The Problem

A home not zoned will leave someone uncomfortable somewhere in your home. It's too much to expect one thermostat to provide perfect conditions for every room in your home. What is comfortable for the sleeping area may be uncomfortable for the living area and vice versa. A home not zoned is uncomfortable and costs you more in heating/cooling costs.
Whether you live in a 1,000 sq. ft. house, a 5,000 sq. ft. house, a townhouse, or an apartment – everybody has a zoning system in their home. Case in point, when you go to turn on the light switch on at the front door, does every light in the house come on? Of course not; we zone our lights. Why do we zone our lights? The number one answer: To save money.

Let’s also take a look at when we go to the kitchen and turn on that water faucet. Does every faucet in the house come on? Of course not; we zone the water in our homes, too. Why? To save on our water bill.

Two out of three mechanical systems in our homes are zoned. But the most expensive one to operate is the heating and cooling system. Yet most homes have only one thermostat in the middle of the house, usually in a hallway with no supply registers and one return. It will not sense east sun or west sun, it will not sense north wind or south wind. But we expect that system to keep all the rooms on the perimeter of the house the same temperature. This is virtually impossible!

The Solution

Why should you sacrifice comfort, spend more money and waste more energy? You no longer have to! Zoning is your answer.

Zoning divides your home into areas with common heating and cooling requirements. Each zone is controlled by its own thermostat, allowing you to be comfortable no matter where you are in your home. Zoning also allows you to leave unoccupied areas without heating or cooling, saving you more money on energy costs. In addition, your zone system can be used with a variety of night setback thermostats.

How Zoning Works

Motorized dampers are "opened" or "closed" by thermostats based on the temperature set by the homeowner. The damper system will control the airflow through the ductwork and deliver ONLY the desired air to the desired location. Each thermostat has the ability to turn on and shut off the heating and cooling. This is called "zoning".

We are zoning areas so that we can allow tighter control of heating and cooling. This is very similar to the the lighting and plumbing systems in a house.

Excess heated or cooled air that is not needed (when only some zones are open) is bypassed back into the air intake side of your heating or cooling system making it many times more effective at cooling or heating the "open" zones. This usually results in much faster heating and cooling of the rooms in your home. (It's sort of like "Turbo Charging" for your home cooling system.)

All this work is monitored by a Zone control processor (system brain) and a series of temperature sensors that integrates with your existing or new Heating or Cooling equipment.

Here are some common sense rules we use when designing a Zone System. When you design a zoned system you should follow these guidelines as much as possible when grouping rooms together to form a zone:

1) Never combine different floors on the same zone. The fact that hot air rises, and cold air falls will sink you before you even begin. As everyone knows, there’s nothing worse than a customer with a hot head or cold feet!

2) Never zone rooms of different construction types in the same zone. For an example, a new addition should always have it’s own thermostat since it t typically has better insulation than the rest of the home, and it will react differently than older sections of the home.

3) Never zone rooms that have perimeter wall areas with rooms that are entirely internal to the structure since they are not affected by the outside temperature changes. All internal rooms should be grouped together whenever possible.

4) All thermostats should be located in the room used the most in any area. Just like with non-zoned systems thermostats should never be installed in hallways, unless the customer plans on doing most of his living there.

5) Never put rooms with conflicting solar or mechanically generated heat loads on the same zone. For example don’t put a east facing room that receives a heavy morning sun load onto the same zone as a western facing room.

We may not be able to follow every rule, but if you at least take them into consideration when designing a system you’ll avoid a lot of trouble.

Let’s look at a two-story house with one system and one thermostat located downstairs. The temperature difference between upstairs and downstairs can be anywhere from 4 to 10 degrees. Why? Because heat rises.

If the sleeping area is located upstairs, what will the customer do to the downstairs thermostat to maintain a 72 to 75 degree temperature upstairs? Crank it down anywhere from 65 to 68 degrees. That means that the downstairs living area, which isn’t even being used, is extremely cold just to maintain a comfortable level of temperature upstairs while we are sleeping. That’s not a very efficient way of cutting back on the energy costs.

The only real way to solve this problem (if the duct work is accessible) is to zone this two-story home. With a thermostat upstairs and a thermostat downstairs, the concept is simple. As the thermostat downstairs satisfied, we have the capability of diverting the capacity of the equipment upstairs and controlling the airflow upstairs.

In this scenario, is the customer concerned about the temperature downstairs in an area of the home that isn’t being used all night? Or would he be more concerned about the comfort in the bedrooms which are being occupied each and every night? Think about he potential savings. Before zoning, in order to be comfortable upstairs, we had to set our thermostat downstairs anywhere from four to ten degrees lower (in the cooling mode). Now that we have a thermostat upstairs, we’re allowed to simply set our thermostat to our own comfort level upstairs and set our downstairs back significantly.

Ranch style house with a centrally located thermostat. We have one system, with the garage on one end of the house where the air handler is mounted. And what’s on the other end of the house? The master bedroom. This scenario could potentially create an airflow problem, as well as a temperature problem. With the thermostat located in the center of the house, it usually satisfies before the farthest run from the equipment has reached the desired comfort level. Zoning solves this problem.

Sounds Great, But I can't afford it...

Not True. Zoning is not as costly as you might think and if a customer utilizes a zoning system properly, like they utilize multiple light switches in the house by cutting lights off that aren’t being used, a zoning system can literally pay itself off in two to five years, and after the payback period, the money saved on your utility bills each and every month, actually gives you a return on your investment!
